I Survived Cancer, And So Can You
This is a an excerpt from my book, Fuck Portion Control, which contains references to other chapters. This information is provided to help those suffering from cancer who would like an alternative approach to conventional medicine but cannot afford my book. My thirties were going to be full of adult realizations and reaching my human potential, finally getting out of life what I expected. I kicked off my thirtieth year with a huge, superhero-glam theme party and invited everyone I knew and loved. So many people came the club asked me to make it a regular night.
I soon discovered, however, that my life was heading in a different direction. For the first three years of my thirties my health and energy slowly and steadily declined. I had been a competitive athlete full of energy and physical ability who was suddenly unable to get off the couch. I fell away from socializing, hiding my declining appearance and vitality away from the harsh eyes of the world. Eventually I gave up strenuous activity altogether, but even walking my dogs around the block left me breathless and achy and caused my extremities to swell. I developed an infuriating, chronic sensation of which the word itch is an insufficient description, which would find its way to my spine whenever I laid down to sleep which whenever I attempted also resulted in a coughing fit that would last for hours and keep me from sleeping all night long. My body ached incessantly, and no matter how much I tried to warm my freezing body with baths, blankets, or sitting in the one-hundred-ten-degree Palm Springs weather proved futile, my body breaking out into sweat even when I was shivering in the cold of winter. A lesion on my tongue had appeared a few years earlier too, which I would later find out is called hairy leukoplakia. It seemed an ill omen, a reminder every time I brushed my teeth that something was very wrong with my health. At first I thought I just had a drinking problem, and tried to abstain with little success. I also suspected a thyroid illness. During this time I visited three different doctors who all said my tests came back "in range", which turns out to be code for I cheated my way through medical school and don't know shit about being a doctor. Let me tell you, if I was a doctor and a thirty-two-year-old came into my office looking the way I did, with the symptoms I had, I would consider myself a poor doctor indeed if I ran only standard tests and was content with the results, which for the last four years always included the phrase “You have an elevated white blood cell count, but no infection,” which it turns out is an obvious sign of cancer.
Just as my life began to entirely fall apart I got to a doctor with enough competence to suggest imaging my thyroid. Five “nodes” were discovered, two the size of tumors. I was scheduled for a biopsy, but lost my then fiancé and health insurance, and found myself without any way to pursue treatment and had to start my life anew while also trying not to die. Thankfully I had just discovered real answers to human biology and began discovering ways I could cure myself. The symptoms of cancer began to disappear one by one, and eventually my health became more robust and normal than it probably ever was. Best of all I got to keep my thyroid.
The fundamental flaw of cancer treatment dates back to early Greek and Roman times. Cancer was rare, but when it did present itself the approach was to cut or cauterize it. This can sometimes be helpful. Often it is not.
Cancer today is alarmingly common, but the view of cancer is still the same—it is considered an alien body, something to be killed and destroyed. This pervasive viewpoint is precisely the reason so many people die from treatment, and why a cure does not exist, and also why cancers return since the underlying causes are not healed in the first place. Doctors are also quite slow to keep up with scientific standards, as an article written by David Epstein in ProPublica points out, the medical profession is loathe to admit to nor implement course corrections when new science becomes available, and often cause death and disease due to ignorance, and even culpability.
Unlike viruses or bacteria, cancer is not an invading pathogen (although some can be started by a virus or bacteria). Cancer is made of our own cells, from our own DNA. Strangely it has not yet struck oncologists that all cancer cells “mutate” in exactly the same way, no matter what type of cancer it is, which is either uncanny or simply reflective of the fact that cancer cells are not caused by mutation, but by their own inherent cellular programming. Cancer cells are simply cells which are sick and trying to heal, but the processes of self-healing employed by normal cells has become stuck in the “on” position due to the immediate environment of those cells which can no longer support normal cellular function. Cancer does not want to eat you alive. It is the body trying to repair damage, but unable to do so. This fundamental misunderstanding is why we pump people full of toxic chemicals, zap them with ungodly radiation, or cut off important body parts and discard them in the trash instead of employing healthy, therapeutic means of resolution. A friend of mine had to take thyroid medication all his life, because his thyroid was removed as treatment for thyroid cancer when he was a child, and he later died of liver cancer during conventional treatment at the tragic age of thirty-seven. Millions of men with prostate cancer find an end to their sex-life when the prostate is removed. Women all over the world must give up their breasts in order to survive breast cancer. None of this is necessary, and it is far past time for more restorative approaches to come to prominence. If an alternative approach of healing cancer is taken, instead of destroying it, suddenly cancer recovery is less painful, easier, and actually successful since cancer is already trying to heal itself, assisting the effort is more effective than trying to search and destroy every diseased cell, as is obvious by the rates of recurrence in cancer treatment.
While my descent into ill-health was terrible, and something I do wish to have never endured, my body became a walking laboratory. On the precipice between health and death, even little changes became more obvious than they would in a completely healthy person. Small improvements in body temperature or energy from certain foods or substances wrought obvious causations and correlations, allowing me to experiment, reason, and evolve the various interworking of the human body, aided by scientific research interpreted through correct physiological context and helping me deduce the path back to health without the help of contemporary medicine, which at best would have left me without a thyroid.
The specific juncture where cancer fails to heal itself is in inflammation. When cells die in their natural course of living they fall apart and leave behind chemicals signals which stimulate new cell growth. This new growth is accomplished by swelling. Just like an embryo growing in a womb, the new stem cells swell into matured cells, and once finished growing the mature cells put out new signals which tell the surrounding tissue that healing is complete and no more new growth is necessary. Cancer cells swell but aren't able to stop. They can't make the new signals which signal healing is complete, because the chemical signals which stimulate swelling continue to persist. This is generally caused by a lack of energy in that area of the body, and basically the cells are suffocating as they grow, unable to oxidize sugar in a normal manner because of the hormones which stimulate growth also inhibit normal metabolism (in order to facilitate growth). So the growth stimulus continues unchecked, stimulating more and more cells until a tumor mass forms. And though the tumor is the focus of the cancer treatment, it is not the thing which actually kills us. There are countless cases of humans living for many, many years with tumors. In fact, all people over the age of 50 usually have tumors in many places in their bodies. Tumors are a natural part of aging. The part about cancer which kills a person are the hormones which the tumor and the cancerous area of the body put out. They are stress hormones meant to briefly stimulate growth and healing, but a constant stream of them eventually overwhelms entire systems, and as the tumor grows it produces more and more of these hormones and eventually results in death.
There are quite a few biologists, like Otto Warburg and Raymond Peat, who have understood cancer for a very long time. Their careers have been spent studying cancers, hormones, and degenerative illnesses in clinical environments. But because they are not part of medical boards or institutions and their ideas aren't spread throughout the medical community, even though Mr. Warburg is so important in biology that he has a Nobel prize and a chemical process named after him. The approach I took to healing my own cancer symptoms I learned from reading their work and applying the science to my own situation. It was one in which I got to heal rapidly and successfully, without great expense nor having to suffer horrible, radical treatments. Sometimes it might be necessary to remove a tumor if it has increased in appreciable size, but radiation and chemotherapy, which damage and destroy other cells and promote destruction of the body are unnecessary and can be replaced with healthier, more effective strategies.
The further I get from my cancer the more convinced I am of the value of such difficulties. My life is endlessly more rich and satisfying because of these tasks which I would never otherwise have experienced. My view of life is both satisfied and deep. Fear of death is just a fear of dying with yet unamended wrongs, and being up against such realities changed me in ways I would never have otherwise. If we have cancer, we can trust that we are intended to learn something very deep and meaningful about life that not everyone gets to learn. It's hard, of course, and sometimes sad, but to us is given the chance to peer beyond the shallow surface of normal life.
Though I had thyroid cancer, these concepts work with all cancers, because all cancers are human cells, and all human cells function on the same mechanics. This approach to dealing with cancer is based on suppressing or altering the hormones which are elevated by the cancer or by the surrounding tissues, which are the hormones that stimulate the unchecked growth, and can work alongside traditional cancer treatment if that is the decision of the patient. Suppressing these hormones slows and can even stop cancer progression, and relieves symptoms. It took only a month for me to experience positive changes, about a year for some symptoms to finally disappear, and two years for entirely good health to be achieved (yet I was also teasing out the interworking of my body at the time, and might have experienced more rapid improvement had I known what I know now).
There is a delusion I suffered most of my life, indeed it is one which most of humanity suffers also, one that causes more pain, heartache, and broken bonds than that of any other to which we are susceptible. That delusion is the erroneous expectation that action is entwined with result. Unreasonable expectations is the phrase often used to describe the failure of outcomes to match what we expected, but it is more than that—whatever we undertake in life, whether making friends, taking tests, applying for jobs, entering into relationships and marriage, raising children, and even fighting cancer, it is never our job nor is it within our capacity to determine the outcome. That is far beyond our ability, and expecting ourselves to bend the course of life to what we think it should or what others may want leads not only to bitter disappointment and an ineffectual approach to life but to a misguided idea that outcomes make our experience. It is not our job to make people love us, to make children turn out, to get an employer to hire us. It’s not even our job to survive cancer. Our only requirement is to show up for life and opportunity, to do our best, and to be helpful. Beyond that it is entirely up to life, and fate, or whatever it is which determines if we live or die. Here we only can strive, but knowing that our responsibility stops before the outcome not only helps relieve us of unreasonable pressures, it also helps to improve the likely outcome because once we turn those things over to the forces which actually make them it frees us to be better at showing up, to covering our actual responsibilities, the ones which we actually can effect. In dealing with cancer especially we are required to come to terms with what it means to have no control over outcomes, what it means to suffer, to live, and to love.
Stress hormones are the primary driver of cancer. These hormones cause swelling, inflammation, and down-regulate the process of cellular respiration. Certain substances like lysine, glycine, taurine, aspirin, vitamin E, vitamin C, and casein protein are what I used initially to depress those hormones, but the subsequent work I have done since recovering such as leveraging the kynurenine pathway or understanding the nuances of nitric oxide are also highly effective against cancer and necessary to prevent recurrence, because the body is a whole system where changes are not isolated to one part or another, and addressing all the symptoms which accompany cancer—because cancer never develops in isolation—can help support recovery. The effect of these specific therapeutic approaches can be felt especially if there are areas of our body which are in constant pain. On administration of lysine or aspirin, pain might be lessened, along with an invigoration of tissues. Taurine raises cellular energy and good hormones, and glycine and casein protein facilitate healing.
The first thing anyone with cancer should do is begin taking aspirin. It is the most effective, easily accessible therapy for cancer. Studies have confirmed that aspirin used with traditional cancer treatment improved the survival and remission rates by an astounding margin. Of course, the study authors concluded that the chemo or radiation was the primary treatment, and aspirin supporting, instead of the reverse even though the patients without aspirin did not fare well at all. For my own therapy, I used between four to eight aspirin a day at the height of my self-therapy (325 mg a piece). Once symptoms receded enough I lowered the dose to two, and then one a day for maintenance. Aspirin works to beat cancer by raising the depressed energy of cancer cells. Because cancer cells are essentially suffocating, aspirin works by facilitating respiration. It also works whether or not we get mainstream cancer treatment. It is important to use a brand without toxic coatings, ingredients, or titanium (read labels!). Plain, normal aspirin is important, as the other substances added to inferior brands can contribute to metabolic issues and worsen cancer. It has proved more difficult to find such products. One brand available online has the unfortunate brand name GeriCare, and also comes as aspirin should be priced, 1000 tablets for $10. Aspirin is not expensive, and store brands with coatings and other crap are designed to make it look expensive rather than having any improved benefit. One aspirin is almost as powerful as four, so it's not entirely necessary to take large amounts. The dose can be gauged by starting off with a low dose and slowly increasing until an increase in pulse and body temperature is discovered, and the dose which causes this would be the one to stay at. Generally I would think that anyone with cancer should use two aspirin twice a day (morning and night). This could be increased to three aspirin twice a day if the cancer or discomfort is very severe. Consistency is most important. The best physical relief I got from aspirin was from the feeling of suffocation which enveloped my whole body, as aspirin helps oxygenate and invigorate cells and relieve some discomfort. It is important to remember that Ibuprofen and Tylenol are not aspirin. Aspirin is aspirin, and other NSAIDs do not have the same benefit to physiology to be helpful for cancer. In fact, since others are toxic to the liver and depress metabolic function they can actually contribute to cancer growth, rather than help. Some studies have finally begun to show how those other products are actually toxic for the body, causing reductions in testosterone and other metabolic functions and should be avoided during cancer treatment (or at all). There are some side effects of aspirin to be aware of, especially when taken in such large doses. It can cause stomach irritation, which occurs because aspirin stimulates the increased use of the amino acid glycine in cellular processes. This irritation is easily remedied or prevented by eating gelatin or taking a glycine supplement (be sure to avoid brands which contain toxic and allergenic additives like gums, soy, and silica). It is wise to proactively include gelatin or a small dose of glycine supplement along with aspirin use, not only to avoid irritation but to better allow aspirin to have its therapeutic effects. Aspirin also depletes vitamin K more rapidly than would occur normally, so it is important to have foods regularly which are high in vitamin K, or better to take a supplement of vitamin K and K2 if the dose of aspirin is very high. Without either of these safeguards aspirin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, the risk of which is increased in people with severely compromised health. This is another reason why it’s a good idea to start with lower but consistent doses.
Secondly, it is primarily important to address gut function as discussed in the chapter on gut health. Of course, the diet should be changed and obviously I recommend one which is strictly adherent to that which is promoted by this book, avoiding polyunsaturated fats like the plague as well as foods fortified with iron, taking care to obtain generous amounts of fruit, vegetables, and good whole foods. Most cancer seems to be the result of sustained bacterial burdens from the gut, or even ones which infect internal tissues. The metabolic products created by pathogenic and bacterial overgrowth in the intestinal system eventually overwhelm our detoxification organs, and those metabolic products then enter circulation and over time will slowly suffocate the respiration of cells. Of course, cancer can result from toxic chemicals, or radiation exposure such as occurs in dental, and medical, and airport screening X-rays, but even when the cause is not initially from bacteria the resultant depression of the immune system will cause bacterial infections to occur, and so it greatly behooves a cancer sufferer to address gut and digestive issues first and foremost. Studies show that increased butyric acid, which originates from our healthy gut microbiota but is depressed in the metabolically ill, more than doubles the activity of vitamin D and helps to restore normal differentiation of cancer cells. Our gut microbiota is the seat of health, and our friendly flora produce many necessary nutrients including short chain fatty acids and the B vitamins. If you have cancer you have poor gut bacteria composition and must restore the healthy varieties to permanently free yourself of the disease.
Next, a person with cancer should get on thyroid medication. Thyroid as it comes to cancer is even more misunderstood than cancer itself. Thyroid is thought by medical professionals to increase the metabolic rate of all cells, and thus promote the spread and virility of cancer. This is entirely untrue, as cancer cells actually suffer from a deficiency of thyroid function. Their metabolism is entirely that of the back-up states of metabolic energy, producing large amounts of toxic metabolites like lactic acid and serotonin. Thyroid directly suppresses the formation of these products, as it does increase the metabolic rate of cells it facilitates a cancer cell’s evolution back to one which is healthy and energetic and able to actually accomplish healing. In my own case I had alternating use of thyroid medication or progesterone, where progesterone directly promotes thyroid function. It immediately had the effect of raising my body temperature and relieving me of some of the very most severe symptoms associated with cancer such as extreme itching, restlessness, pain, and the feeling of suffocation. If you cannot get thyroid medication you can order it from abroad. It is ridiculously regulated in the United States and should be made available as an over-the-counter drug, but many other countries rightly have less restrictive access to this helpful medication and so can be obtained if a prescription cannot. I only used the thyroid hormone T3, which is often distributed as liothyronine. T4 is often prescribed, but it is not the expressly helpful form because it must then be converted by the body into T3, and this is often the juncture where thyroid function is deficient. Also, taking T4 will naturally suppress the body’s natural production of it, where this does not happen with T3. Most prescriptions of T3 are also far too potent. The liver inactivates anything over 8 mcg of T3 and most pills come in 25 or 75 mcg. In such case the pill can be broken into smaller sizes, taken three times a day. T3 is also the primary driver of thyroid function, and thus the most effective thyroid mediation to take for cancer. Its use will stimulate cancer cells (and potentially cancerous cells) to heal completely into their proper differentiated tissue.
Thankfully, if you cannot find a doctor willing to prescribe thyroid medication, progesterone is also an equally effective backup, and is often helpful along with aspirin and thyroid medication as well. In fact, I sometimes prefer progesterone to thyroid because progesterone also directly manipulates the hormone profile for the better. It directly competes with some of the more cancer promoting hormones like estrogen and cortisol, and can rather quickly raise the body temperature which is usually quite depressed in those with cancer. I used progesterone intermittently throughout my cancer treatment and found it to be equal to thyroid medication for improving thyroid function and relief from cancer symptoms. Progesterone is more of a female hormone, but it has the effect of invigorating tissues just like thyroid. Using enough progesterone will help raise the body temperature and metabolic rate significantly through increased thyroid activity. Sometimes it can even produce fever-level temperatures of 100, and this is a good sign if suffering from cancer as it would indicate the immune and thyroid system coming back online (if it exceeds 102, though you probably have a true fever and should seek medical attention). Women, especially those suffering breast cancer will benefit amazingly from progesterone use, and progesterone is being used in study after study to support cancer treatment, and in fact progesterone is the best thing for women to take to support breast health—I have had some women complain that it makes their breasts too large (in those who are already well endowed) as progesterone can stimulate breast enlargement. In men progesterone will lower testosterone a little while taking it, which has some significant effects but nothing long term or bad (progesterone helps maintain muscle mass, however). Especially if facing death, in my opinion, I chose rather to have the benefit of progesterone and put my libido on pause (finding that the libido reduction was not too severe anyway, and returns within days of stopping progesterone). I would describe progesterone as an essential, emergency, life-saving therapy for cancer treatment, and anyone with severe cases should seriously consider taking progesterone. Synthetic or soy-derived progesterone can be harmful, however, just like synthetic or soy-derived vitamin E, and should be avoided. If the product does not state the source of origin, it is likely soy and another source should be investigated. Prescription progesterone is often synthetic, and most studies which show negative effects of progesterone were in fact done with synthetic forms, where studies showing a positive effect were done with natural progesterone. Natural is less expensive anyway. Progesterone is also non-toxic, so overdosing is not a worry (overdosing produces symptoms of sleepiness and relaxation). Since like aspirin progesterone increases the metabolic rate, it is important to be well-fed, especially with carbohydrates, when using it. Progesterone can also promote improvements in sleep, which will be comforting since most cancer patients also suffer insomnia.
My body temperatures and pulse rose within days of beginning progesterone, which relieved me of the stiffness, lethargy, and histamine induced irritation almost immediately. If progesterone is unavailable or you don’t desire to use it, pregnenolone is an almost equally acceptable substitute. Sometimes in someone with advanced illness pregnenolone will convert into stress hormones. While elevated stress hormones are usually a bad thing, in this case it is good because it simply reveals a steroid insufficient metabolism and this can be relieved by consuming generous amounts of protein and carbohydrates, which should be occurring anyway. Pregnenolone is the master hormone of the body, and so the body converts it into whatever is needed at the moment. Taking care to provide for the metabolism with a good diet sufficient in nutrients will help make that conversion the hormones which best support the health. Although pregnenolone will not increase the metabolic rate quite as dramatically as progesterone, it has many other healthy benefits which can improve prognosis. Coconut oil also converts to pregnenolone in the body, and in fact can be used to manually generate large amounts of it. This process uses up large amounts of vitamin A, however, so consistent but not excessive intake of natural carotenes or vitamin A (not supplemental, which can be toxic) are necessary to avoid vitamin A deficiency if using coconut oil.
It is described generally that cancer cells spread like a seed in the wind, coming loose and traveling to other parts of the body only to infect new areas of the body. This is incorrect. The hormones produced by the environment of a body with cancer are what stimulate and promote its development in other organs by suppressing the metabolism of all tissues. Stem cells which migrate are transformed into cancer cells by their environment, not by mutations. It is thus possible to suppress these hormones as they occur, to thus not only stop the spread but to also help the cancer heal properly. Aspirin and thyroid accomplishes this pretty well on their own.
Next, the amino acids lysine, glycine, and taurine are quite effective in addressing the hormone output of tumor cells, because they directly alter the pathways through which a tumor synthesizes torporific hormones such as serotonin, or by reducing these hormones generated by other parts of the body which in turn help promote a tumor’s growth and function. Primarily, lysine interferes with two routes of torporific hormone synthesis—both the nitric oxide inhibition of mitochondria through antagonism of arginine and the serotonergic inhibition of the metabolic rate by antagonism of tryptophan. It needn’t be exact, and I simply took 1 or 2 grams of lysine twice a day for many months of my recovery. Lysine can cause some side effects that must be watched for, however. Initially it might make a person space-out, less aware of their surroundings, because much of the body, including the brain, has been running on high stress hormones for so long that not only has cancer developed but now the body is used to only running on stress hormones. Since lysine helps stop those stress hormones some cognitive and energetic functions will be temporarily handicapped. Be careful especially while driving (and do not drive until you know how lysine will effect you). Take more caution, pay attention to where you are going and what you are doing. Double check that the stove is off before you go to work (I came home one day to find my apartment over 100 degrees after having left the gas burner on all day). This effect went away after a little more than a month, and my perception is better than it has ever been because now that I am healthy my body doesn’t rely on stress hormones as it did when I was sick. Lysine will also make physical exertion difficult, since the body can no longer exert itself without the intervention of stress hormones, energy supply will cut short when engaging in physically demanding activities which were being fueled only by stress hormones such as running, climbing a hill, or engaging in sex. Although these actives may thusly become difficult, it is only because the body is no longer able to excrete high stress hormones and in the absence of stress hormones the cancerous areas of the body are finally able to heal. Thyroid and progesterone, however, also steps in to facilitate normal energetic processes, and so using thyroid or progesterone with lysine will prevent some of these side effects, and in combination can more quickly elevate body temperature and pulse rate. Long term, I also noticed that lysine can also cause a cough, because nitric oxide, which it suppresses, is a natural surfactant in lungs and a facilitator of the immune system. This is a sign that too much has been taken, and should stop immediately for a time until this effect has vanished. Nitric oxide is a contributor to cancer growth because it inhibits cellular respiration. Another upside of lysine administration is that it helps spare muscle tissue, for reasons discussed in the chapter on muscle growth, so lean muscle is easy to put on when using it and can help cancer patients gain some strength back. It also helps impart feelings of relaxation and to induce sleep. If you decide to use it, consistency is the key, taking it one day a week or whenever you feel like it won't do anything to help cancer.
The suppression of excess nitric oxide by lysine use helps to free mitochondria to properly respirate. But the reason that nitric oxide suppresses this in first place as discussed in previous and other upcoming chapters is in nitric oxide’s tendency to bind to the respiratory enzyme cytochrome oxidase. This is a natural feature of nitric oxide which is intended to help prevent excessive metabolic use of spare nutrients during times of stress, chiefly in wintertime when sun and nutrients are typically low. But too many factors in our contemporary lives will artificially elevate and promote this action of nitric oxide at times and conditions when it is unhelpful, which thus strongly promotes the development of cancer by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration. More powerful than using lysine to block excess nitric oxide is in taking steps to liberate cytochrome and mitochondria from nitric oxide. There are three major factors which must be addressed in this case, and in fact these are required in order to prevent or delay death from cancer, as without these factors it is far more difficult for the other steps in this therapy to have a sufficient effect, as they all work through action of mitochondria to restore proper cellular energy production. The first is that absolutely all food must be free of agricultural organophosphate pesticides like glyphosate. Glyphosate especially inhibits uptake of dietary sulfur compounds which promote the removal of nitric oxide from cytochrome oxidase. This is the mechanism of action by which roundup and other similar contaminants promote cancer. Such pesticides wipe out our gut microbiome and more unhelpful strains take up their place. This also has the effect of reducing our synthesis of B vitamins and vitamin K, all of which would be highly advantageous in fighting metabolic diseases such as cancer. All food absolutely must be organic in order to stop exposure to these cancer promoting substances. Often sneaky sources like coffee or snacks and treats you wouldn’t think about must also be organic. If exposure to glyphosate has been a factor, you can use magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) to hasten detoxification as several studies have shown magnesium sulfate to improve clearance and resistance to the effects of organophosphate pesticides. It will not at all protect you against glyphosate if exposure continues, but it will make your effort to avoid it more fruitful.
Equally effective to lysine use are the introduction of the other two factors which liberate mitochondria from nitric oxide, which are sunlight and substances called thiols, which are discussed at length throughout this book. Sunlight reacts directly with the enzyme cytochrome oxidase and stimulates the liberation of nitric oxide. Regular, safe sun exposure is required in order to help liberate cells and promote healthy respiration. If sitting in the sun is bothersome, this is a sign of low antioxidant capacity as light directly stimulates cellular oxidation, so use of a non-corn vitamin C supplement can help. But this also points to a deficiency of our primary endogenous antioxidant glutathione, which is also a thiol, and as such also directly removes nitric oxide from mitochondria. Because glutathione is a sulfuric protein, it is also inhibited by pesticides such as glyphosate. But it is also promoted by adequate intake of selenium, which if supplemented must be the bioavailable form selenomethionine, or obtained easily from organic Brazil nuts, liver, or oysters. Glutathione also promotes the recycling of vitamin C and vitamin E, and it is a deficiency of glutathione which greatly promotes the development and progress of cancer for these and other reasons, but which is most easily promoted simply by avoiding exposure to glyphosate. Another source of dietary thiols which is comparable in efficacy to promoting glutathione is asparagus. The smell which asparagus promotes are the abundant dietary sulfuric thiols reacting as they do in the body to promote the removal of nitric oxide from mitochondria. This action of sunlight and thiols also pushes nitric oxide out to the blood stream where it then dilates blood vessels and becomes doubly effective not only by liberating mitochondria but now increasing blood flow to tissues and an increased delivery of nutrients and oxygen, further increasing recovery from the conditions which have suffocated cells and promoted the development of cancer.
Glycine is another amino acid which helps to turn off cancer by quieting the overexcited nature of cancer cells, and since it should already be in use through gelatin or a supplement for aspirin it can further improve recovery from cancer. When cells become overly stimulated the way they are in cancer, the stimulation is difficult to turn off, and in fact remains turned on at all times, exhausting cells of their energy and resources but never allowing them to relax and regenerate. This is also a function of exposure to glyphosate, which by destroying our microbiota interrupts our ability to absorb and synthesize our own glycine. With cancer, glycine will help insulate over-excited cancer cells, which will then allow healing to begin. Glycine taken in isolation can cause problems if taken in excess though, so do not exceed three grams at any dosage, and probably no more than 6 grams a day. It is also wise to start with small doses and slowly increase until its effects become familiar. Glycine can bind to other things in the digestive tract, like calcium. This could be a problem, say, if a large dose of calcium is taken along with glycine (which I did and it almost sent me to the hospital). It's best not to take glycine with any mineral supplements, and best taken with food. It is most effective at night, and I prefer to get glycine from gelatin rather than the individual amino acid. Gelatin also has other helpful amino acids like proline. While it won’t have as obvious an effect as the individual amino acid, it will still contribute strongly to the therapeutic healing of cancer, and is a good idea to include gelatin as a regular part of a healthy and cancer-preventative diet besides.
Taurine works much the same way as lysine for cancer therapy, but where lysine suppresses stress hormones taurine works by elevating good ones. Taurine raises dopamine, progesterone, thyroid, and the protective sex hormones as long as the diet supports such actions, and can also help lift the mood of cancer sufferers. It also aids in the use of amino acids, so it helps glycine and others to be used in more productive and healing ways. Taurine also benefits detoxification pathways by helping the body get rid of metabolic waste. Unlike lysine and glycine, taurine is not found very much in foods and needs to be synthesized by the pancreas. Unfortunately in disease taurine is often severely diminished, and is often impossible to improve taurine levels without supplementation. Taurine, however, is also not without side effects. It can cause a stomachache at first, as it stimulates bile output and excess bile can irritate the gut, but this effect goes away after about a month of supplementation. In fact, I believe that taurine does this to excrete excess iron, because there is a lot of iron in bile, and the effect diminishes over time which would reflect a diminishing store of excess iron. In this regard, taurine, like aspirin, has a beneficial effect on cancer in part by eliminating excess iron. So taurine use should be eased into, starting with a low dose and increasing slowly. If gut irritation occurs it is wise to reduce or abstain from dosing until the irritation subsides, then continue once there is no more issue. Both taurine and lysine can cause headaches or migraines during withdrawal, because of their effect in opposing stress hormones (the headache is a rebound of stress hormones in the brain, which cause swelling). So if you aren't consistent with your doses, you will get a headache. Consistency is also more helpful than potency, so small doses taken with regularity will be better than large doses taken sporadically. It’s also wise to not take taurine or other amino acids for a great period of time without taking a break (like a year). I went for two years taking taurine regularly, but I recommend going no more than a year before stopping for a time.
Vitamin E is another powerful tool to improve cellular function and energy when dealing with cancer and other metabolic issues. Its action comes from preventing the abnormal aromatization of androgens into estrogens, a characteristic that is common in cancerous tissue. Remember that estrogen promotes excess iron uptake, and iron is elevated in cancerous tissue. Vitamin E, by preventing aromatization to estrogen, helps to slow and even stop the growth of tumors and the uptake of excess iron. When taking vitamin E it's very important to take only natural forms of it, as the synthetic ones unfortunately are not up to par and can in fact cause damage themselves. Most available supplements of vitamin E are synthetic. Natural vitamin E should be labeled as a such, though just because the word ‘natural’ or ‘nature’ appears in the brand name does not mean their E is from a natural source, and in fact those words are often used to trick consumers into thinking the product is not synthetic. Pay attention. Natural vitamin E can be identified by looking at the back label and noting that a supplement contains d-alpha tocopherol or mixed tocopherols. Synthetic vitamin E is labeled as dl-alpha tocopherol, the only identifiable difference being that small l following the d. Some forms of vitamin E are called tocotrienols, and aren't as understood scientifically and don’t appear to have the anti-cancer action as the tocopherols. They are safest to avoid, especially since tocopherols work just fine. I would also stay away from sources which originate from soy, as soy has extremely negative properties and there seems to be some unethical practices surrounding the manufacturers which use soy, lacking transparency and what not, not to mention potential contamination with glyphosate. It’s also best if you can find a product without extra oil in the ingredients, although that’s not totally necessary and some of the best which are derived from sources such as sunflower are just fine if they have some extra sunflower oil. Vitamin E and Aspirin potentiate each other, so taking them together has an even greater effect for the resolution of cancer.
I also used casein protein to great effect in the treatment of my cancer. After learning of casein’s superior protein quality I ordered some to assist in meeting protein requirements, also noting that it also helped prevent nightly muscle catabolism. Because casein takes many hours to digest (as opposed to whey which digests very quickly), it delivers a continuous stream of amino acids into the blood stream while digesting. I began taking it about three months after my tumors were discovered. Within three days of taking it the places on my body which had been in constant, excruciating pain (my left ribcage, my left kidney area, and my groin) suddenly vanished. It wasn't even intermittent relief, but complete abatement. These places had been in constant, agonizing pain for more than a year but were suddenly totally gone in just a few days. I had already started taking lysine, taurine, and aspirin (and vitamin C in the form of plentiful oranges) and the casein might not have been this effective without their use, but it wasn't until I took casein that the pain completely went away. I didn't plan right and ran out of that first bucket of casein before its replacement arrived. Three days after not having casein the pain came back to those areas just as hard and bad as it had ever been. I was so relieved to get my new bucket of it, and in another three or four days the pain went away again completely. It's now been years since that day, and now that I am healthy I have gone without casein often and there has been no return of pain to those areas.
It is important to use casein at night, before bed. Its therapeutic benefit, aside from the quality of protein, comes from preventing nightly catabolism of tissues by stress hormones, because it provides a continuous stream of amino acids. This is where I think its anti-cancer action comes from, and though it may also help by supplying high-quality protein, I don't expect a benefit from if it’s not taken before bed. It's also important to take a brand that is free of toxic additives like soy lecithin, carrageenan, and binding gums. At first I took so much that I went through a bucket rather quickly, but it turns out the body can't use a large amount at a time anyway, so no more than 20 grams is enough to dose before bed, and the bucket will last a long time. But consume as you like, it's good any time of day especially if you don't have time to cook, in smoothies as well, just make sure it’s primary role is before bed every night. I also kept a huge casein protein shake with me during the day, made with copious amounts of sugar, fruit, and milk or orange juice, in addition to all the other food and sugar I was taking, to prevent any lapses in hunger which can exacerbate cancer problems and prevent total healing. It is difficult or impossible to find organic casein, and casein can be expensive anyway, so a more economical and equally effective product is simply to use organic milk powder, as casein protein makes up 80% of milk protein anyway, there’s not much difference between using casein and just using milk powder, except that milk powder also has all the minerals and vitamins of normal milk as well (just don’t take whey protein alone, as this can contribute to the synthesis of torporific hormones). Organic milk powder is also useful for suppressing streptavidin producing gut bacteria which inhibit biotin as discussed in the chapter on gut health, so in this sense milk powder can actually be a better option. Casein is also usually made to make cheese. Regardless of the source, any form of casein at night before bed will help prevent the nightly catabolism of tissue from stress and thus slow or reverse damage caused by cancer and thus promote relief and recovery.
One of the worst symptoms which anyone with cancer will be familiar was an insane, body-wide irritation which seemed to be located under the skin, deep within my nerves as if they were dissolving them in acid. It worsened at night, when the sensation seemed to concentrate along my spine and was the primary driver of my debilitating insomnia. Even if you have cancer but don't have this symptom, you perhaps have some kind of general feeling of restlessness. This is caused by an overproduction of histamine, which has a helpful function in healthy people but devastating to cancer sufferers. This occurs because the system which stimulates histamine release, which is the autonomic nervous system, is overactive in cancer states and is in fact thought to be a primary driver of cancer, where tissues have become lethargic and the autonomic system tries to step in to stimulate their metabolic activity but which results in the constant over excitation of tissues which then results in tumors and cancer. GABA is the primary inhibitor of this phenomenon, as the GABA amino acid is the coordinate opposite of the stimulatory amino acids glutamate and aspartate. Engaging the GABA system can help to turn off this terrible condition, but antihistamines can be used to provide relief from this. Raising the metabolic rate through therapy will naturally relieve this condition as well, but antihistamines do more for cancer than just relieve the itching. Antihistamines block many of the destructive effects of the stress which are causing the histamine release in the first place. Antihistamines calm the autonomic nervous system, reducing cellular excitation and allowing nerve cells a chance to turn off and heal. Taking the right antihistamine is important, however, as some medications which pose as antihistamines are actually steroids or other non-antihistamine product with antihistamine-like actions, but are not true antihistamines. The ones which are are safe and most effective for cancer treatment are referred to as “first generation antihistamines.” Some are available as prescriptions, but some area also available over-the-counter. Diphenhydramine and doxylamine succinate are two such forms available by many brands. These antihistamines also function as sleep aids (and are sold as such) and so can help cancer sufferers sleep. I haven't been been able to find any products, however, that don’t contain at least some toxic additives though some of the generic brands are safer with less ingredients. I would avoid types which have titanium, dyes, and other metals if possible. Normally, I dissuade people from taking products with such ingredients but the effect of antihistamines on cancer symptoms is so powerful it would still be good to take them. Taking antihistamines for an extended period of time can be a burden on the liver too, so its good to take a break and avoid long-term use.
Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) is an absolute necessary tool with which to fight cancer. During the cancer state the metabolism is compromised such that the body can no longer produce adequate amounts of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), which is discussed at length in the chapter on niacin therapy. This deficit of NAD prevents the normal metabolic functioning which would enable cancerous cells and tissue to heal. Aspirin, thyroid, progesterone, and pregnenolone work in part by facilitating an increase in the production of NAD, and the nitric oxide inhibition of mitochondria also directly suppresses NAD synthesis, but directly supplying niacinamide two or three times a day will manually up-regulate the formation of this vital metabolic intermediary. It helps raise body temperature which facilitates faster metabolic rate which also helps depress histamine release to improve comfort and energy levels. Often it can powerfully promote sleep in doses of 250-750 mg. Some brands of niacinamide aren’t very good, so if taking it does not result in an increase in redness of the fingertips (and even the tongue) through increased circulation, try another. Taking excess without food will result in headaches, so make sure to eat.
Lastly, vitamin C is a non-optional treatment to cancer recovery. Vitamin C is intimately involved in many metabolic processes which promote normal steroidogenesis, cholesterol formation, bile excretion, antioxidant activity, and protein and tissue synthesis. It also chelates iron. By facilitating an increase in oxidative metabolism by protecting against reactive oxygen species, vitamin C allows the metabolic rate to rise to the levels which help heal cancer. Natural sources of vitamin C are crucial, and the bulk of it should be obtained through the increase consumption of high-vitamin C foods. After that, supplemental of a non-corn derived vitamin C can be helpful or even necessary, and I have found it best to use those which are 100% naturally sourced, but a non-corn supplement can be convenient. If the source of its origin is not labeled it is manufactured from corn, which can be allergenic and potentially contaminated with glyphosate as well. Normally the body can recycle vitamin C through the action of glutathione, and very small amounts can have the cumulative effect of many, many grams. but because glutathione is severely diminished in cancer states it is then necessary to supplement large doses of vitamin C to compensate, as without vitamin C the body cannot regenerate tissue nor increase the metabolic rate.
One of the worst offenders in cancer development is lactic acid. This is the same metabolic product which is produced after a hard workout, but which in cancer patients becomes produced even at rest and is a constant presence in the body. Lactic acid lowers the metabolic rate of all cells and promotes the conditions which caused cancer in the first place, and major sources of dietary lactic acid such as yogurt should absolutely be avoided during recovery. Raising the metabolic rate through the use of aspirin, thyroid, progesterone, niacinamide, and the liberation of mitochondria from nitric oxide, etc., will naturally help prevent the formation of lactic acid. But the use of sodium acetate can help combat lactic acid excess. Sodium acetate is also a part of my approach to gut health (and the recipe is in that chapter too). By helping to reduce lactic acid it can help remove conditions which promote cancer growth. But acetic acid also promotes the formation of steroids and the healthy formation of cholesterol, among many other benefits which can help in cancer recovery.
When it comes to cancer treatment, food is just as if not more important than medicines and therapies, and is a therapy unto itself. A cancer patient who doesn't pay attention to what they eat is a dead cancer patient. Wheat is one of the main dietary drivers of cancer, because the proteins in gluten (and it's relatives like barely and rye) actually stimulate the production of the same destructive stress hormones for which the use of lysine is therapeutic. It causes cellular respiration to slow, and contributes to the suffocation which is the state of cancerous tissues. When suffering cancer, eating common wheat is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Cancer sufferers must stop eating wheat until they are well. The detrimental effects of wheat are further exacerbated by the addition of free iron to wheat flour, because the reduced metabolic rate of a cancerous body and tissues promote the excessive uptake of iron which further suppresses cellular respiration, and care must be taken to avoid iron supplemented food and iron supplements. Lactic acid such as occurs in yogurt and fermented foods also promotes cancer growth by lowering metabolic rate and body temperature and should be avoided entirely. Fish, seed, corn, and canola oils all also exacerbate cancer, because these oils are unstable in the high heat, high oxygen environment of the human body and produce metabolic byproducts such as lipid peroxides, malonaldehyde, and oxylipins which interrupt the high-respiratory pathways that promote healing, such as occurs in the kynurenine pathway and the formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide as discussed in the chapter on niacin therapy. Sadly, most restaurants use these inferior oils to cook their chips, omelettes, and French fries and if you have cancer, your choice is to eat out and die or stick to home cooking and foods without those oils (store-bought salad dressings, mayonnaise, and other fat and oil based products are major offenders too). The effect of foods on the metabolism of anyone with cancer can be directly measured through the pulse and temperature diagnostic as discussed in the chapter on self therapy, and this diagnostic is a valuable tool in monitoring progress as an increase in metabolic rate as measured through pulse and temperature will stop cancer growth, while declinations in these numbers, indicating reduced metabolic rate, promotes cancer growth. Butter, coconut oil, dairy fat, cocoa butter, grass-fed tallow, and shea butter are the opposite, stable and beneficial in high-temp, high oxygen environments and can help to stabilize cancer cells and prevent the production of stress hormones while improving the respiratory capacity of damaged cells. In fact, I was able to stop taking my thyroid medication entirely after consuming a diet high in dairy and cocoa butter. The composition of dietary fat in the diet is the most important nutritional aspect of long-term cancer survival. Keeping blood sugar elevated is also important, since low blood sugar stimulates the release of stress hormones which in turn exacerbate the degenerative conditions of the cancer. As discussed in chapters such as gut health, GABA therapy, and hair restoration, foods like those which are high in anthocyanins such as darkly colored berries or those high in thiols and sulfur such as asparagus strongly promote the removal of nitric oxide from mitochondria, thus allowing cells to respirate properly, which in turn promotes the healing of cancer. Eat regularly—no less than every two or three hours. Some theories on sugar’s connection to cancer claim that cancer runs on sugar. This is technically correct but is actually an observational error, as cancer cells do take up lots of sugar they in turn convert that sugar to fat and then metabolize the fat for energy. It does no good to remove sugars and carbohydrates when healing cancer because the other body systems which are needed to heal and prevent the cancer from worsening need carbohydrates and sugar to function properly, and removing sugars from the diet only worsens the physiological state of cancerous tissues as the resultant stress hormones will still catabolize sugar from your own tissues and still feed the cancer. Cancer’s use of sugar to form fat for energy is directly caused by things like the nitric oxide inhibition of mitochondria, and this will be reversed and healed by addressing that as well as the use of things like aspirin, progesterone, thyroid, and niacinamide which increase mitochondrial respiration.
Other supplements that can support recovery from cancer I have found are vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B7 (biotin). B vitamin combinations usually have terrible additives and I don't recommend them—so I take mine individually (some synthetic B vitamins like B6 are also toxic to the liver in large quantities). Natural sources of high B vitamins like nutritional yeast can be a great way to get the helpful B vitamins needed for a cancer-healing diet, as well as lots of whole food and good meals. Normally the B vitamins are supplied by our gut bacteria, so addressing gut issues as discussed in that chapter will help restore normal B vitamin production. The inhibition of biotin by streptavidin producing bacteria is a major consequence of exposure to glyphosate, and can be addressed by the strategies in that chapter to promote a restoration of the gut microbiome. As biotin is necessary for our body to break down nutrients such as the branched chain amino acids it is a crucial nutrient for the proper functioning of our metabolic health and can go a long ways toward hastening recovery.
Supplemental thiamine (vitamin B1) can be especially useful for cancer though because it raises cellular energy production and cellular respiration, especially when taken with carbohydrates, and increases the amount of CO2 from the respiration process which in turn helps relax and oxygenate cells. Thiamine can cause body odor, however, as a sulfur-based molecule will bind to excess cellular iron and since iron compounds are largely excreted through the skin can result in unwanted body odor. Again, I wanted to live, even if meant smelling bad, but I found out later the odor can be mitigated by also taking riboflavin (vitamin B2), which improves the excretion of iron in some way that reduces or eliminates the body odor. B2 can be very activating, however, so it’s best used in smaller doses less frequently than B1 and not in the evening or at night.
Another supplement which can also help but is more of a supporting role is an enzyme which is cheap and widely available called bromelain. It originates from pineapple and being a protease enzyme aids in breaking down aberrant proteins and extraneous tissue mass while cleaning up arteries, the digestive system, and inhibiting microbes among an exhausting array of benefits. Bromelain will not compensate for poor diet and is not effective enough on its own, but in conjunction with other strategies can dramatically increase the healing rate and relief of symptoms.
Also, when suffering from cancer it is silly to expect healing while drowning the tissues in alcohol, whose nature it is to dissolve and destroy. It turns out the cancer warning on alcohol labels is not a suggestion, although alcohol is not actually the cause of cancer it does promote the accelerated growth of cancer. My search for relief from cancer was initially motivated by the desire to continue drinking and get well without having to quit, which I eventually found was impossible to do. If you have cancer and continue to drink, well, you’d be exactly like me. The chapter on curing alcoholism provides information on how to tackle that through diet and therapy and can make abstinence possible, if it is difficult to do.
The benefit of many of these therapies comes from their strategic inclusion and their effects on metabolic pathways. Unlike powerful pharmacological substances they do not have a greater effect over a poor diet and or other behaviors which contribute to the cancer state, and will provide no cure if an overall awareness is not kept. The benefit from these therapies are dependent on consistency, to knock out the other pathways which promote cancer growth. It doesn't benefit the user to be timid nor careless in their use. It is also important for any women with cancer to avoid estrogen products, as estrogen stimulates growth and helps to worsen the expansion and migration of tumors. This can include many herbal supplements, as plants more often raise estrogen than otherwise.
A person using these therapies should notice at least small positive improvements within days, or else they are not doing it right, especially reflected in the measurement of pulse and temperature, and without using this metabolic diagnostic tool as discussed in the chapter on self therapy you will be guessing your progress, which will leave you uncertain and uniformed. Measuring the temperature and pulse constantly as described in that chapter can empower you to visualize and directly measure your progress (or lack thereof), which can help you make adjustments or lean on especially useful strategies more strategically. Positive changes such as increases in body temperature, feeling more relaxed, lessened pain, aggravation, improved energy, etc., are signs that healing has begun, and prognosis thereafter is linked with alleviation of symptoms. This is not something that we wait for months to see, wondering if you're doing it right. It should begin happening right away and continue to improve linearly, continuously and consistently. If you don't see positive changes you are probably not adhering to one or more of the concepts, such as wheat or bad fats abstinence and need to evaluate diet and behavior or reconsider supplement strategy. It would be helpful to read up on each substance as well to understand its nature yourself.
The great temptation from this therapy is to begin taking health for granted once it starts to return, and to resume old habits and be less regimented in treatment. This is a mistake because symptoms will disappear even while the potential for recurrence is still high, and treatment should continue for a full year or two after symptoms abate. Although some parts like lysine supplementation can be stopped during such time, aspirin, thyroid, B vitamins, sunlight, and nutritional aspects such as consumption of thiols should continue to have a constant presence to ensure total remission. Unlike the conventional approach to cancer treatment, healing through nutritional therapy can actually resolve the cancer altogether, without high risk interventions. Cancer does not need to be the frightening development it is usually considered. It is just your body trying to get well, and you can help it along with a little care and planning.
