Health For Gamers

I often joke that I am the very first millennial. Supposedly the birth years which include millennials are 1981 to 1996. That would technically put me two months before the cutoff date, and cutoffs for such esoteric characterizations of these generational descriptors is just as absurd as their genesis. One of the very real hallmarks of the so-called millennial generation is having been the very first generation to grow up playing video games.

Hair Regrowth Progress

My DSLR I thought was broken actually works, so I tried to take a macro picture of the hair regrowth I have going on. It’s really hard to do such a thing on your own, lol, but it turned out pretty good, even showing the beads of sweat that resulted. It’s hard to tell now where the old hair line was, since so many of the border hairs have now matured, but you can see all the new anagen hairs which have spread across the hair loss field.

Vanilla Berry Pudding

Who doesn’t love pudding? Well—American pudding has been a staple ever since the second World War, when industrial food production kicked into high gear. Puddings are traditionally foods which are steamed or boiled, and could be sweet or savory, and what Americans refer to as pudding is actually a custard, or supposed to be a custard

Frittata

Frittata has one of the highest impressiveness to effort ratios of any dish. It takes no time to put together, but looks like it took hours and can easily feed several people. It has all the characteristics of a soufflé, omelette, and scramble in one easy-to-make dish.

You Don't Know How To Make Chicken Soup

Most people think of chicken as being a healthy dish. And they would be wrong. Mostly. Chicken is fine, but because chickens are usually fed diets which include soy and corn and do not have digestive systems which convert bad fats into healthier types, the way that

What Is Feminism And Why Are Equal Rights For Women So Controversial?

The term feminism today generates as much or more anger and controversy as any other political topic. It immediately conjures images of Jane Fonda advocating for peace way back during the Vietnam war or topless female protestors marching in New York, Washington D.C., and London, feminist slogans painted across their naked skin. Recently I fell, innocently, into a YouTube hole…

Sandwiches + Homemade Mayonnaise

Sandwiches may seem like a silly thing to have recipes for, but they can be an economical way to get lots of great nutrition and satiety, and if you take proper steps to use healthy ingredients you can use food like sandwiches to not only satisfy your hunger but promote rather than inhibit health, which a surprising amount of components do.

Breadmaking Guide

Reading bread recipes online can make you freak out and slam the laptop shut. They're usually just written poorly or overwrought in their technique. Bread really isn't that difficult.

Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Yes this is actually made with fusilli—I didn’t have actual macaroni on hand, and to us uncouth Americans macaroni and cheese is more about a short pasta with a cheese sauce than it is about actual macaroni noodles. The reason this is made with fusilli is only because one of my favorite einkorn brands, Jovial Foods…

Recrimination in Relationships and How to Salvage Them

“You look so ugly when you talk like that,” said my mother one day when I was seventeen, “I wish I could record you so you could see how ugly you are.” I don’t remember exactly what we were fighting about—I had recently been discovered as homosexual and our relationship had become yet more strained under their dismissal and increased persecution. I was a very good kid—I got the best grades in my family, never tried drinking or smoking, was still a virgin…

Saturday Morning German Pancake

Sometimes you just have to start the weekend with a decadent, indulgent breakfast, and German pancakes are absolutely that. Some recipes have weird cooking instructions though, but making a German pancake couldn’t be any simpler, delicious, and healthy when made with these ingredients. If you’ve never made this before it’s quite a spectacular sight when you first take it out of the oven

Why The Letter "I" Should Always Be Included in the LGBTI Acronym

A few months after my suicide attempt I moved home with my family in a misguided attempt to recuperate. Home had moved from a tiny town in Utah full to the brim with bigoted Mormons to Lahaina, Hawaii. I had tried to end my life due to debilitating depression surrounded by the rejection of my family and friends for being gay, and the idea of going home to them in an island paradise at first seemed like a good idea. I was beyond disheartened to arrive and find my parents even more bigoted and abusive than before.

Kids Don't Like Vegetables. Deal With It.

Several years ago I was on a phone call with one of my sisters. She began venting about how her children were not eating. “What are you feeding them?” I asked. She rambled off several different food items, most of which were vegetables. I began to explain to her why kids don’t like vegetables, and how she could get around it,

Yuca Hash Browns

Somehow these are even better than normal hash browns, which I didn’t think was possible. Yuca (pronounced yo͞oka, also called cassava and not to be confused with yucca) is one of the most powerful foods you can use to shift the gut microbiome. It is so effective in supporting healthy gut microbes that its effect can last for an extended period of time after consumption

Green Salad with Strawberries

This is one of my favorite salads. It is sweet, refreshing, and surprisingly filling. I have wanted to put another salad recipe here for quite a while specifically to talk about salad dressings. Store bought dressing is nearly always made with the kind of cheap, crappy oils that will shorten your lifespan and contribute to poor health.

Kvass (Probiotic Beverage)

Kvass is a delightful traditional Slavic fermented drink. Originally it was made with bread, but fruit varieties are now most popular because they are especially appealing for children. In my book, Fuck Portion Control I talk about how most probiotic products are not helpful and sometimes even harmful because they are usually made of strains which are chosen for their hardiness through the distribution and packaging process and not because they are especially healthful

The Cure For Depression

The promising things in life mean nothing when your soul is as empty as a late 90's AOL sub-category chatroom. By the time I was able to have a legal drink my depression was a Shakespearean tempest, having grown over four years from a gentle glumness into a great, black dragon of despair.
